CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS CALL FOR EQUAL DISTRIBUTION OF VACCINES

Civil society organizations are advocating for equal distribution of vaccines among all nations in order to bridge the vaccine disparity between wealthy and developing Nations.

The call was made during a media round table meeting on accessibility of COVID-19 vaccines organized by AIDS Health-care Foundation, AHF in Abuja.

The Organization Country programme Director, Dr. Echey Ijezie said vaccines should serve as fundamental human rights and not for economic benefits.

He noted that it is imperative for relevant stakeholders to add their voice in the global call for equal distribution and accessibility of COVID-19 vaccines without strict restrictions.

He said the principle of social justice has not been applied in regards to vaccine distribution.

One of the panelists, Interim Deputy National Coordinator Association For COVID-19, Hajiya Hauwa Mustapha who spoke on the level of preparedness, said the government needs to intensify its public health Communication strategies to reach out to the grassroots and overcome the conspiracy theory that had contributed to the slow vaccine acceptance.

She said government should engage in global partnership to enhance local pharmaceutical production to allow adequate access to COVID-19 vaccines.

Also speaking, one of the panelists, Bar. Rommy Mum called on the government to adequately engage civil society organizations to sensitize the public on the dangers of COVID-19.

The media round table meeting was partly virtual with various experts participating with the emphasis on the need to link up the already existing gap between wealthy Nations and developing countries.
