FCTA COMMENCES DEMOLITION OF ILLEGAL STRUCTURES IN RUGA COMMUNITY

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has commenced the removal of about 2, 400 shanties posing a security threat in the Ruga community along the railway corridor of Abuja.

Director, FCT Department of Development Control, Mr. Mukhtar Galadima who stated this at the scene of demolition in Abuja, said the move became necessary in view of the security challenges being experienced in the area.

He hinted that after the demolition exercise, a team to monitor the area would be set up to prevent a return of such illegal settlements.

Chairman, FCT Task Force on City Sanitation, Mr. Ikharo Attah, noted that the Ruga settlement had become notorious for rape and other crimes hence the need to clear the illegal structures.

Chief Security Officer to the FCT Minister, Mr. Ahmed Rashid, pointed out that recent security assessments in the area showed that 90 percent of the crimes perpetrated in Wuye and Kukwuaba districts were traced to the settlement.

Mr. Rashid revealed that the decision of the Administration to clear the Ruga community was taken after assessing the submissions of security agencies.

Leaders of the Ruga Community, called on the FCT Administration to assist in relocating affected persons, said they had been living in the settlement for more than 25 years.

The FCT Administration said the demolition exercise, is in continuation of its resolve to rid the FCT of all illegal structures especially those that serve as potential hideouts for men and women of ill-will.
