FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INAUGURATES FIRST INFECTIOUS DISEASE CENTRE IN THE NATION

The Federal Government has commissioned the first infectious disease centre in the country, in the University Of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada.

The Infectious Disease Centre was commissioned by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control through the Federal Ministry of Health.

Minister of Health,   Dr. Osagie Ehanire, commended the efforts of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and the management of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital and further reiterated the federal government’s commitment to health security in the country.

The minister hinted that the model would be replicated across the 36 states to ensure that the country was better prepared for infectious disease outbreaks.

Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu said the project began in 2019 following the need for a treatment centre for serious infectious diseases in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following the 2018 Lassa fever outbreak.

He revealed that the 30-bed Infectious Disease Centre is designated to manage viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Lassa fever, and other infectious diseases including COVID-19 in the FCT as the treatment centre will also serve as a molecular laboratory for the prompt diagnosis of diseases.

After the handing of the Infectious Disease Centre, the Minister of health also commissioned the Accident and Emergency Unit and Cardiology Centre of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Ehanire, also laid the foundation of a 76-bed Mental Health Block which, when completed, would have facilities for specialised therapies, an emergency area, consulting, psychotherapy and seminar rooms, and a pharmacy.
