SUPER FALCONS BEATS ALGERIA 1-0 MOVES CLOSER TO JAPAN 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES

Nigeria Senior Women’s National Team, the Super Falcons yesterday at the Agege Stadium, Lagos, defeated Algeria 1-0 to move to the second round of the Japan 2020 Olympic Games’ qualifying series on a 3-0 aggregate.

The Super Falcons had last week beaten the Algerians 2-0 in Algiers to make yesterday’s game an easy exercise with Barcelona star, Asisat Oshoala scoring Nigeria’s lone goal in the 57th minute.

Despite the star-studded presence of foreign players in the Falcons side, the Algerian ladies were determined to get something out of the game but they found it difficult to outmaneuver the more experienced Nigerians, who capitalized on the North Africans’ inexperience to take the day.

Speaking after the game, Super Falcons coach, Thomas Dennerby said he was not satisfied with his girls’ performance, stating that his girls were overconfident and relaxed following the first-leg victory.

Meanwhile, the Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, who also watched the match alongside the Minister of Women Affairs Pauline Tallen, said he was delighted on the Falcons’ victory, saying that measures would be put in place to ensure adequate welfare package for the women team players.

The Super Falcons will next face Cote d’ Ivorie in the third round later in September.
