This followed a revamp in their constitution earlier this year that sidestep a two-term limit on presidential mandates.

The race to the presidential seat in Guinea is close to an end has citizens head out to cast their votes across the country.

Independent electoral commission confirmed that over five million voters register to cast ballots in the presidential contest and ninety percent of the voter’s card was collected.

The presidential candidate is the incumbent president Alpha Conde and eleven other candidates, most notably the former Prime Minister of the country, Cellou Dalein Diallo.

President of Guinea however said as a democratic leader, he hopes the election will be free and fair as expected in a democratic society.

Earlier this week, a leading opposition group said ninety-two people were killed by security forces over the past year during the protests against Conde’s bid for a third term.

However, the United Nations urged candidates has urged the government to make sure security forces deployed to and around polling stations and effectively protect people while respecting their right to demonstrate peacefully and vote.

The election is currently going on peacefully across the country.
