61 ATHLETES TO REPRESENT TEAM NIGERIA IN 9 SPORTING EVENTS AT THE 2020 TOKYO OLYMPICS

A total of sixty-one athletes will represent Team Nigeria in nine sporting events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare disclosed this yesterday when he addressed the plenary meeting with National Sports Federations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Mr. Dare said the country will field 22 sports men and women in athletics, three in Badminton, twenty-four in Basketball and one each in Canoe sprint, Gymnastics, Rowing, Taekwondo, Table Tennis and Wrestling.

He said his Ministry in collaboration with the Nigerian Olympic Committee has scheduled a fourteen-day Pre-Games Training Camp for the athletes in Kisarazu, Japan, with the aim of further exposing the athletes to adequate preparations ahead of their events.

Mr. Dare added that the first batch of the athletes are scheduled to depart for Kisarazu on July 6 while the second batch will depart the country seven days later for the July 23 to August 8 Games.

The Sports Minister expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for his immense support in approving and ensuring that funds were released to enable the country’s athletes attend a series of qualification tournaments.
