ANTONIO GUTTERES URGES THE WORLD TO EMBRACE PEACE

UN Secretary General, Antonio Gutteres has urged the world to shun violence in order to usher in a new era of peace and tolerance.
The Secretary General gave the remarks on the occasion of the International Day of Non-Violence which was the core philosophy of one of India’s founding fathers, Mahatma Gandhi.
The International Day of Non-violence which falls on the birthday of the iconic leader, Mahatma Ghandi was used to reflect on the challenges faced around the world.
Mr. Guterres who called on the world to follow the enduring vision and wisdom of Mr. Gandhi stated that the resolution of differences through non-violent is at the core of the United Nations.
He urged everyone to heed Gandhi’s message of peace and build a better and more peaceful future for all.
Mahatma Gandhi, as he is known by his followers with reverence, preached the philosophy of non-violence which has become even more relevant today.
His commitment to non-violence and peaceful resistance gave hope to marginalized sections of India. He is remembered as a man whose vision for India was that of a country where people of all religions lived harmoniously. He was killed in 1948 by a gunman identified as Nathuram Godse who was executed for the murder.
It would be recalled that the UN in 2007 declared the second of October every year as the International Day of Non-Violence to disseminate the message of non-violence through education and public awareness.
